YOU LEFT YOUR EX-WIFE ON THE ROAD WITH YOUR TWINS… THEN YOUR INVESTIGATOR FOUND THE RECEIPT THAT TURNED YOUR “PERFECT” FIANCÉE INTO A CRIME

You close the office door at the top of Torre Ferrer and the silence feels like a verdict.
Your hands are still shaking from the image of Lucia on the roadside, the twins pressed to her chest like two tiny heartbeats you never knew you owed.
You stare at your own reflection in the glass wall and you don’t recognize the man looking back.
Because if those babies are yours, you didn’t just lose a marriage. You lost years you can’t buy back.

Ignácio calls you three days later at 6:12 a.m.
His voice is tight, stripped of his usual calm.
“Emiliano,” he says, “you need to sit down.”
You grip the edge of your desk like you’re bracing for impact.
“Talk,” you order, and your throat tastes like metal.

“I found Lucia,” he says first.
“She’s living on the edge of Contagem, in a one-room place behind a mechanic shop. No running water. Electricity comes and goes.”
Your stomach twists, because you used to sign checks for charity events without thinking.
And the woman you promised to protect was boiling water on a borrowed stove.

“And the babies?” you ask, voice low.
Ignácio pauses. “Twins. Around eleven months,” he says. “They’re yours.”
You close your eyes, and your chest tightens so hard you can’t breathe for a second.
“How do you know?” you force out.

“I have DNA from a hospital record,” Ignácio replies.
“Lucia took them to a public clinic twice. The nurse kept a heel-prick card in the archive. We got a legal match.”
Legal match.
Your world tilts anyway.

You whisper, “Why weren’t they registered?”
Ignácio’s answer is a knife: “Because someone blocked it.”
He inhales. “Lucia tried to put your name. She had a signed acknowledgment form.”
Your jaw clenches. “Then why—”
Ignácio cuts in, “Because the form was replaced.”
