“I didn’t know that,” he whispered.

Carmen looked at him with gentle sadness and signed again.

Elena hesitated before translating.

“She says… she didn’t want to be a burden to you. You were building your company, always busy.”

The silence at the table spread through the entire restaurant. Even nearby guests had stopped talking.

Elena felt Mrs. Herrera’s eyes burning into her back, but she ignored it.

Carmen kept signing.

Elena smiled as she translated.

“She says this is the first time in a restaurant someone has spoken her language.”

Tears shimmered in the older woman’s eyes.

Elena signed back warmly:

“Everyone deserves to be heard.”

Carmen suddenly reached across the table and held Elena’s hand.

Julián watched the scene with a mixture of surprise and emotion.

“What did she say now?” he asked quietly.

Elena hesitated.

Then she spoke.

“She says… tonight she finally feels seen.”

For the rest of the dinner, Elena communicated with Carmen through sign language—explaining the menu, joking about desserts, even describing the ocean waves outside.

For the first time that evening, Carmen laughed.

And the entire restaurant noticed.

When dinner ended, Julián stood up slowly.

“Miss Elena,” he said.

Mrs. Herrera rushed over, nervous. “Was everything satisfactory, Mr. Valdés? We pride ourselves on excellence—”

Julián raised his hand slightly.

“I’m speaking to her.”
