Emily crouched a little lower and extended her hand.
“You’re allowed,” she said warmly. “And tonight, dinner’s on me.”
Slowly, uncertainly, they followed her into the warm glow of the diner.
A few minutes later, four steaming plates of food sat in front of them. The girls stared at the meals as if they might disappear if they blinked.
“Go ahead,” Emily encouraged. “Eat as much as you want.”
They didn’t need to be told twice.
The sound of forks scraping plates filled the quiet diner as the girls devoured the food, their hunger finally winning over their hesitation.
When they finished, the oldest girl looked up.
“Why are you helping us?” she asked carefully.
Emily paused for a moment before answering.
“Because someone should,” she said simply. Then she added with a soft smile, “And tonight… you’re my girls.”
None of them could have known that those words would shape the next decade of their lives.
From that night forward, Emily became something the girls had never truly had before.
A constant.
After long shifts at the diner, she brought home extra food. She searched thrift stores for clothes that still had life in them. She helped them with homework at her tiny kitchen table, sounding out words and teaching them how to read late into the evening.
Her tips disappeared into notebooks, pencils, and school lunches.
She worked double shifts when money ran short. Some nights she went to bed hungry herself, but she never let the girls see it.
People in the neighborhood noticed.
Some shook their heads in disbelief.
