The Woman Who Vanished
That evening, Matteo sat alone in his study, the silence pressing heavily around him.
The old woman had refused everything—money, food, even a ride.
She had only whispered to the girls…
And then disappeared into the crowd.
Her name lingered in his mind like smoke.
Lucinda.
Desperate for answers, Matteo searched through Isadora’s belongings. Hours passed before he found it—a faded letter hidden inside her jewelry box.
It was signed:
Lucinda.
Forgive me, my daughter. I cannot come to the wedding. My shame is too heavy. But know that I love you… always.
Matteo’s pulse raced.
Isadora had told him her parents were gone.
Had she been hiding the truth all along?
The Truth Revealed
The next day, Matteo returned to the plaza.
She was there.
Sitting in the same place. Waiting.
“You are Lucinda,” he said quietly.
Her pale eyes opened. “I am.”
“Why now?” he asked. “Why appear to my daughters?”
Her voice trembled.
“Because they called me. I felt them before I saw them. And when they touched me… I knew.”
Matteo’s chest tightened.
“Knew what?”
“They can see.”
“That’s impossible.”
Lucinda shook her head gently.
“Not impossible. Different.”
She reached into her blanket and pulled out a small vial.
Isadora’s perfume.
“I kept this,” she whispered. “Waiting for the day her children would find me.”
Matteo’s world shifted again.
“Isadora had a gift,” Lucinda continued. “She could see beyond sight. She inherited it from me. And now… your daughters have it too.”
