Before he died, my father whispered, “Be careful with your mother… she doesn’t…” Just then my mother entered the room… and he breathed his last.

Before he died, my father whispered, “Be careful with your mother… she doesn’t…” Just then my mother entered the room… and he breathed his last.

—He tried to report you.

Duarte’s face hardened.

—And that’s why he had to die.

I felt the air disappearing from my lungs.

But then something unexpected happened.

My mother stepped forward.

—It’s all over, Rafael.

Duarte smiled.

-Not yet.

And at that moment…

Sirens were heard.

Red and blue lights illuminated the windows.

Duarte’s smile disappeared.

—What did you do?

My mother picked up her phone.

—I called the police ten minutes ago.

Duarte’s men ran towards the back door, but it was too late.

The police stormed into the house.

Minutes later, Duarte was handcuffed.

As they were taking him away, he stared at me.

—Your father started this.

The door closed.

Silence returned.

I looked at my mother.

—So… the house…?

She sighed.

—The money was to pay off the debts that Duarte created using your father’s name.

—And the letters?

-Evidence.

—Did you burn them?

—Fake copies.

I remained silent.

For a whole year I had hated the only person who had actually tried to protect us.

-Mother…

My voice broke.

-I’m sorry.

She hugged me.

For the first time since my father’s death, I cried.

Weeks later, I found another letter hidden inside the notebook.

It was the last one my father had written.

It said:

“Daniel,
if you’re reading this, it means you finally know the truth.
Your mother is the bravest person I’ve ever known.
Trust her.
Always.”

And then I understood something that took my breath away.

The phrase my father had tried to say before he died was not a warning.

It was an incomplete confession.

I hadn’t meant to say:

“Be careful with your mother.”

I meant to say:

“Be careful… with Duarte.
Your mother… knows everything.”

And for a whole year…

I had hated the wrong person.
