When Sofia’s feet hit the take-off board, the dry sound bounced off the walls of the Bercy Arena like an amplified heartbeat.

For a fraction of a second, everything seemed to stop.

Sixty thousand people were watching.

The cameras followed every millimeter of his movement.

Roberto Castillo, sitting by the track, had seen that jump thousands of times in training. He knew the exact speed of Sofia’s run-up, the height she reached, the precise moment her hands touched the vaulting horse.

But the instant his feet left the board, he felt something strange.

Something wasn’t the same.

The impulse was stronger than usual.

Too strong.

Sofia hit the vaulting horse with brutal power and her body shot upwards to a height that even surprised some judges.

And then Roberto understood.

In the air, Sofia was not performing the jump they had practiced for months.

Something had changed.

The first turn came faster than expected.

The second somersault extended with an impressive amplitude.

But instead of closing the movement as they had practiced…

Sofia opened her shoulders.

He added another half turn.

A minimal adjustment for the public.

But gigantic for anyone who understood gymnastics.

Roberto stood up without realizing it.

Because he knew what it meant.

That extra half turn wasn’t in the plan.

And in a jump with so much rotation, changing something in mid-air could be the difference between a clean fall… or a disaster.

The stadium remained in absolute silence.

At the judges’ table, one of them leaned forward.

Another one immediately looked up.

The movement they were seeing did not exactly match the one shown on the difficulty sheet.

But what mattered most had not yet happened.

The fall.

The cruellest moment in gymnastics.

The ground was rapidly approaching.

Sofia was descending at a brutal speed.

His feet touched the mat.

There was a slight rebound.

The body tilted slightly to one side.

For a tenth of a second it seemed as if he was going to take a step to regain his balance.

Sixty thousand people held their breath.

But Sofia tightened her abdominal muscles, adjusted her shoulders, and stopped the movement.

Completely motionless.

No steps.
