Richard reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.
Inside was a check worth 10 million dollars.
He handed it to Emily.
“For everything you gave my family.”
Emily smiled gently…
…and handed it back.
“I can’t accept this.”
Richard looked confused.
“You saved my son’s life.”
Emily nodded.
“I was already paid.”
“My paycheck came from the American people.”
“My reward was seeing your son survive.”
The room erupted into the loudest standing ovation of the night.
People who had judged her only minutes earlier now stood with tears in their eyes.
Some military veterans saluted.
Others simply applauded until their hands hurt.
