The room grew still.

Wine glasses stopped halfway to lips.

My father frowned slightly at the interruption.

He hated unscripted moments at events like this.

Bootsteps echoed at the entrance.

An officer walked inside wearing a pristine dress uniform.

In one hand he carried a black presentation case.

He scanned the room.

And immediately found me.

Seventeen years of silence seemed to line up behind my spine like armor.

Every mile of training.
