The next morning I wore the only suit that did not press painfully against my scar, and when we arrived at the courthouse Nick looked confident and composed beside his attorney, barely acknowledging my presence. Inside the courtroom I felt small and powerless, and every time I tried to speak his lawyer objected, saying my statements were emotional or irrelevant, and without representation I could barely defend myself.
Then, unexpectedly, Chloe spoke up and asked the judge if she could show something that I did not even know about. My heart dropped, but she stood there bravely and explained that she had a recording on her tablet.
