She glanced toward the family photos still hanging in the hallway.
Fifteen years of marriage.
Vacations.
Christmas mornings.
Anniversaries.
Every memory now looked like evidence from someone else’s life.
“You told me I’d come crawling,” she reminded him quietly.
“I didn’t mean that.”
“Yes, you did.”
“No, listen— Chloe doesn’t even know what’s happening yet. If this gets out, people will talk. Clients will panic.”
Lauren’s expression changed slightly.
Interesting.
“So you’re worried about your reputation?”
“You know how business works.”
“Oh, I know exactly how your business works.”
And that sentence finally scared him.
She heard it immediately in the silence that followed.
Because Evan suddenly realized something horrifying:
Lauren knew far more than she was supposed to.
His voice became cautious.
“…What does that mean?”
Lauren looked at the final document in the folder.
The one her attorney told her not to discuss over the phone.
The one connected to offshore transfers.
Fake vendor invoices.
Missing tax payments.
Criminal-level problems.
She spoke slowly.
“It means your divorce is no longer your biggest problem.”
Complete silence.
Then:
“What did you find?”
Before Lauren could answer, another voice suddenly erupted in the background.
A woman screaming.
Chloe.
“Evan!”
The phone muffled as he turned away.
Then Lauren heard Chloe yell words that made her sit upright instantly:
“Why are federal agents downstairs?!”
Lauren’s eyes widened.
Evan returned to the phone breathing hard.
“Lauren…”
For the first time since she met him…
He sounded truly afraid.
“WHAT DID YOU DO?”
Lauren stared into the darkness beyond her kitchen window.
Then she calmly whispered:
“I said OK, Evan.”
And she hung up.
