PART 2 The photo showed Valeria.

PART 2 The photo showed Valeria.

She had probably been trying to tell him she was pregnant.

With twins.

His twins.

A violent nausea twisted inside him.

While he had been vacationing in Europe with Valeria…
While he bought diamonds, designer dresses, and luxury cars…

Carmen had been abandoned pregnant and alone.

Sleeping who knew where.
Starving.
Collecting trash under the brutal Monterrey heat just to keep their babies alive.

His babies.

Alejandro slammed his fist against the desk so hard the glass cracked beneath it.

For the first time in years, he cried.

Not quiet tears.

Broken, uncontrollable sobs ripped from somewhere deep inside his chest.

Because suddenly he remembered everything Carmen had suffered silently for him over the years.

The nights she stayed awake helping him build his company from nothing.
The way she defended him when powerful families mocked his humble beginnings.
The miscarriages she cried through alone while he buried himself in work.

And this was how he repaid her.

By throwing her into the street like garbage.

His phone rang.

The investigator again.

“There’s more,” the old commander said grimly.

Alejandro wiped his face violently. “What?”

“Carmen is sick.”

The room went cold.

“What do you mean sick?”

“She collapsed twice this month while working near the highway. According to a clinic nurse, she’s hiding severe heart complications after giving birth. She can barely afford formula.”

Alejandro stopped breathing.

“And the twins?” he whispered.

A pause.

“They’re malnourished.”

Silence swallowed the office whole.

Then the investigator added one final sentence that destroyed what remained of Alejandro’s soul.

“She still wears her wedding ring.”
