At first, he was silent.

“How far along?” he asked.

“Six weeks.”

He turned toward the window.

“My board can’t know. My mother can’t know. This would become a scandal.”

“A baby is not a scandal,” Mara said.

“For you, maybe not.”

The words broke something between them.

Then Damien pulled an envelope from his jacket.

“You brought paperwork?”

“I’m trying to be practical.”
