I began to cry.
But there was still one question.
“Why now? Why during this cruise?”
Robert looked away.
“Because Elizabeth is seriously ill. She knows she may not have much time left. She wanted to see you one last time, but she was afraid of how you would react.”
At that moment, the door opened.
The elderly woman with white hair stepped inside.
She stopped when she saw me.
“Margaret…?”
I walked toward her.
For 53 years, I had believed I had lost my best friend.
And now she was standing right in front of me.
I hugged her as tightly as my strength allowed.
“Why did you leave me alone for all these years?” I whispered.
Elizabeth began to cry.
“Because I thought I was doing the right thing. But now I understand that I took away your right to choose.”
We talked for a long time.
She told me about her life and showed me pictures of her children and grandchildren.
