After 69 years of marriage, I sat in a lawyer’s office and learned that my husband had left me absolutely nothing in his will. I was still trying to understand how the man I had spent nearly seven decades with could do that when his attorney quietly handed me a sealed letter. My husband’s handwriting was on the front. I opened it with trembling hands, and the first line made my heart stop: “This was my plan. Now I have to tell you the truth.”

Walter’s warning no longer seemed paranoid.

Denise had brought me a predated legal document and somehow obtained confidential information about nearly half a million dollars of my money.

She had made her move.

And now it was time for me to discover what Walter had hidden inside the second envelope.

Part 3: The Second Envelope

That afternoon, Roman came to my house still wearing his coat, his expression already tense before I opened the door. He told me Denise had called him because she was worried about me living alone, but I no longer heard concern the way I had the day before.

“And you’ve been giving her my bank statements?” I asked.

Roman’s face changed immediately. He admitted he’d shared some financial documents, but insisted he’d only done it because Denise said she needed them to help me after Walter’s death.

“I thought I was making things easier for you, Mom.”
