I recognized the company immediately. It was one of the shell corporations hidden in Julian’s financial records.
A judge authorized DNA testing. The result showed a 99.998 percent probability that Marcus was Julian’s biological father.
“You stole me,” Julian told Eleanor.
“I saved you,” she answered. “I gave you wealth, education, and the Vance name. What could that doctor have offered you?”
Marcus stared at her. “You took my only child the night my wife died.”
Eleanor showed no remorse. She told Julian that everything he had become existed because of her.
“You didn’t make me,” Julian said. “You purchased me.”
Police took Eleanor away for questioning about the abduction and falsified records. For one brief moment, I felt sorry for Julian.
Then he approached my bed and demanded the financial evidence I had collected.
“Give me the files,” he said. “I’ll withdraw my custody request.”
I could hardly believe him. “You just learned your entire life was built on a crime.”
“And those records could destroy my company.”
His childhood had been stolen from him, but that did not excuse what he had chosen to do to me. Julian had cut off my insurance, abandoned me during labor, and tried to trick me into surrendering Noah.
That evening, my attorney Rachel examined the files. Along with hidden transfers and payments to Ruth, she found emails between Julian and Eleanor.
Two weeks before my due date, Eleanor had written:
Once she has the baby, exhaustion will make her easier to control. Get her signature before the medication wears off.
Julian had replied:
What if she refuses?
Eleanor’s answer was clear:
Then we prove she is unfit and take him anyway.
A final message had been sent on the morning I went into labor:
Once she signs, take the baby. I handled one birth certificate before. I can handle another.
Rachel looked at me. “This proves Julian knew about the plan.”
I watched Noah sleeping beside me. Julian had spent his life as the child Eleanor stole.
Now he had willingly helped her try to steal mine.
PART 4: The Evidence Julian Couldn’t Buy
Three days after Noah and I left the hospital, Julian filed for emergency custody.
He claimed I was unemployed, emotionally unstable, and living in an apartment unsuitable for a newborn. He even used my decision to drive myself to the hospital as proof that I could not make responsible choices.
