She looked at her hands.
“I wanted a chance to talk to you.”
“About Mark?”
“Yes.”
It was an incomplete answer.
I could feel it.
But before I could question her, Miriam opened another document.
“This transaction references a company called Northhaven Administrative Services.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“That company is Celeste’s.”
Miriam studied the payment trail.
“Then we need to establish exactly who owns these accounts and who authorized the transfers.”
Vanessa leaned forward.
“There’s something else.”
She reached into her bag again.
This time, she removed a photograph.
It showed a row of filing cabinets in a storage room.
Several had blue labels.
One drawer was marked with a single word.
ARCHIVE.
“Mark keeps older records there,” she said.
“The company records go back almost thirty years.”
“Why would that matter?”
I asked.
Vanessa looked at me for so long that I felt uncomfortable.
“Because I think his lies started much earlier than the medical bills.”
