Chapter 1: The Hundred-Million-Dollar Lie 027

A process server delivered documents to my hotel.

Mark was petitioning for emergency authority over certain financial decisions, alleging that my behavior had become erratic following a sudden windfall.

His declaration described me as emotionally unstable, financially irresponsible, and vulnerable to manipulation.

It cited my history of grief.

It cited the money I’d supposedly wasted.

It even described my decision to leave our home as evidence of impaired judgment.

The man who had emptied my accounts was accusing me of being unable to manage money.

Attached to the petition was a statement from Celeste.

She claimed I’d become suspicious without reason and had refused sound professional guidance.

There was also a letter from a physician I’d never met.

The letter expressed concern about information Mark had reported concerning my behavior.

It did not contain a diagnosis.

But it was written in language that made ordinary grief sound dangerous.
