Chapter 1: The Hundred-Million-Dollar Lie 027

The evidence was no longer limited to my statements or Vanessa’s discoveries.

It came from different people, different institutions, and transactions spanning years.

Mark was arrested on financial charges.

When I saw his photograph in the news, I barely recognized him.

He wasn’t smiling.

His shoulders sagged.

Without expensive clothing and practiced charm, he looked like an ordinary frightened man.

My first thought was that he must feel terribly alone.

Then I remembered Vanessa at fourteen, searching the internet for a mother she’d been told didn’t want her.

I turned off the television.

Through counsel, Mark eventually indicated that he wanted to discuss a resolution of the financial case.

My divorce continued separately.

The criminal investigation concerned the money he’d taken from families and businesses.

The civil proceedings addressed our marriage, property, debts, and the consequences of his misconduct.

Neither process was simple.

There were hearings, delays, document requests, and days when I felt exhausted enough to disappear.
