For twenty years, my mother made sure the homeless boy living behind our house never went hungry. After her funeral, he took both my hands in his and told me, “Before she d:ie:d, she BEGGED ME TO KEEP HER SECRET FROM YOU.”

Dad’s voice crackled through the kitchen speakers one last time.

“If Gabriel is sitting there with you, make sure to give him the larger slice because that boy never eats enough,” Dad said with a warm chuckle.

Gabriel looked at me across the table with a soft smile.

I looked down at the pie, remembering that painful afternoon decades ago when one missing slice of dessert had felt completely unforgivable to my eight-year-old self.

Then I cut two equal pieces of pie and slid one toward Gabriel.

“I think we have both waited long enough for this,” I said gently.
THE END.
