I nearly dropped the folder.
Frank whistled softly.
But Evan wasn’t finished.
“There is a condition.”
I frowned.
“What condition?”
“The money is not payable directly to you.”
My stomach dropped.
“Who gets it?”
Evan looked toward the unfinished sign.
“A charitable trust your father created six weeks before his death.”
Mom whispered, “Margaret’s Place.”
Evan nodded.
The insurance money could only be used to develop the retreat.
I laughed in disbelief.
“Even dead, he’s telling me how to spend money.”
Frank grinned.
“Sounds like him.”
Then Evan’s expression turned serious.
“There is another issue.”
Of course there was.
“The policy was contested.”
“By who?”
“Your father’s brother.”
My uncle Ray.
A man I hadn’t seen in eleven years.
“He claims Daniel was mentally incompetent when he created the trust.”
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Probably.”
Evan closed the folder.
“But if he wins, the policy may become part of the estate.”
