FULL: My dad started charging me $250 a month for my room when I turned 18 002

For three weeks, lawyers exchanged letters.

My $43,000 sat untouched.

Mom returned to Willow Ridge.

Margaret’s Place seemed to be disappearing before it had even begun.

Then Evan called.

“We have a hearing Friday.”

I barely slept Thursday night.

In court, Ray’s attorney spoke for nearly an hour.

Then Evan stood.

“Your Honor, we have evidence Mr. Daniel Carter had been planning the trust long before his diagnosis worsened.”

He produced notebooks.

Blueprints.

Correspondence.

Bank records.

Then the judge asked:

“Any witnesses?”

Evan smiled.

“Yes.”

Frank testified first.

Then Dad’s cardiologist.

Then something happened none of us expected.

The courtroom doors opened.

My mother walked in.

She wore a blue dress.

Her hands trembled.

But she walked to the witness stand without assistance.

Ray stared at her as though he had seen a ghost.

Which, in a way, he had.

“Margaret?” he whispered.

Mom turned toward him.

“Hello, Ray.”
