I was struggling to walk home with my eleven-month-old baby balanced on my hip, my i:nj:ured leg aching with every step and heavy grocery bags digging into my fingers, when my father suddenly pulled his car alongside me. He lowered the window and asked, “Sweetheart, where’s your car?” When I confessed that my mother-in-law had confiscated it because she believed I wasn’t worthy of driving, his expression turned ice-cold. He opened the passenger door and said quietly, “Get in, honey. Tonight, we’re putting an end to this.”

“Camila, would you like to explain what happened?”

I swallowed, realizing he wasn’t going to fight my battle for me.

“Linda took my keys even after I explained Noah needed formula. Ethan was sitting right there, and he didn’t stop her.”

Linda gave an irritated laugh.

“The vehicle is registered to my son. I was teaching her responsibility.”

Dad turned toward Ethan.

“Is that true?”

My husband looked down at the porch steps.

“Yes.”

“And you knew your wife was walking to the grocery store with your baby?”

Ethan nodded.

Before anyone could speak, my father-in-law, Richard, stepped outside. He looked from Noah to my swollen ankle, then toward the keys in Linda’s hand.

“What happened?” he asked.

“Camila decided to involve her father in a private family matter,” Linda answered.

“I found her limping beside the road,” Dad said. “She was carrying groceries and your grandson.”
