I stared at it.
“The tire from three years ago?”
“That is.”
“Did you steal money from a 13-year-old girl?”
His face was blushed.
“At first no.”
Evan muttered, “He was arguing like 20 minutes.”
“Because I was about to call your mother!”
“You said I was bothering the customers.”
“You were.”
I raised my hand.
“What happened?”
The owner sighed.
“He was not leaving. Finally, I took the envelope because I thought I would find a way to return it to you later.”
He opened a drawer under the cash register and placed a worn white envelope over the counter.
On the front, written with Evan’s handwriting, there were two words.
FOR TYRES
I looked at my son.
“Did you keep it?”
The owner nodded.
“Every dollar.”
Evan reached out to catch him.
I stopped him.
“No.”
Her eyes shone.
“It’s not yours, Mom.”
“Actually, honey, this money was mine before you were old enough to shave.”
The owner almost smiled.
Evan didn't.
He pulled out his hand.
“We needed the tires.”
“I know.”
“So we owed him a favor.”
“No,” I corrected. I owed him a favor.
Evan seemed genuinely confused.
I stared at the envelope and then re-displayed the bus map.
tire workshop.
Barber.
Grocery store.
A street near the old primary school of Evan.
People.
Places.
Dollar amounts.
For the first time, I didn't wonder what Evan had spent his money on.
I was wondering who I thought I owed him money.
I looked at him.
“How do you remember this?”
Evan responded with four words that changed everything.
“Dad would have remembered.”
I stood still.
The shop owner looked away.
I downloaded the map.
“What does your father have to do with all this?”
Evan grabbed his backpack.
“Nothing.”
This time, I stood in front of the door.
“Evan.”
“Move, Mom.”
“No.”
His eyes filled with tears, and that scared me more than his anger.
“Please, Mom.”
“Tell me.”
“I can’t.”
“¿Por qué?”
Se secó la cara bruscamente con la manga y luego miró el mapa que tenía en la mano.
En cada círculo.
Todos los lugares relacionados con el peor año de nuestras vidas.
Finalmente, susurró: “Porque me vas a decir que pare”.
Al mirar esos círculos de nuevo, comprendí una cosa.
Hiciera lo que hiciera mi hijo todos los sábados, nunca había tenido que ver realmente con una bicicleta.
