My boyfriend insisted on an elegant Valentine's Day dinner. When the 380 bundys bill came in, he told me to pay half. I refused. He quietly paid all the sum, got up and left. The waitress came up to me and whispered, “I can’t remain silent. Your boyfriend left you a note.” The w0rld collapsed on me when I read it.

And now I was hoping she'd contribute a hundred and ninety dollars?

He didn't mind the money itself. He could easily pay his half of the bill. That was not the problem.

“This is strange to me,” he said carefully, choosing his words. “You planned this whole evening for Valentine’s Day. Why would I have to pay half of the special appointment you invited me to?”

He squeezed his jaw visibly.

“This is a real relationship,” she said firmly. “We are the same in this relationship, right?”

“Of course I do,” she replied. “But a true relationship is not about dividing the cost of a surprise dinner that you planned especially for me.”

The atmosphere at his table changed dramatically. The background music suddenly felt intrusive and too high.

For several seconds, they simply looked in silence.

The sudden exit that changed everything
Then he made a little gesture towards the waitress. She walked up to her table in silence.

He handed him his payment card without telling his girlfriend anything.

He paid the full account without them exchanging a single word.

No discussion. No fight. No explanation.

He got up from the table.

“See you around,” he said in a monotonous tone and no emotion.

And he just walked out of the restaurant.

So, without looking back.

She was paralyzed, feeling a heat that went up her neck and her hands trembled uncontrollably.

The sounds of the restaurant were distorted around him. She felt deeply humiliated and exposed to strangers.

At that moment, the waiter slowly approached the table.

The woman seemed very uncomfortable.

“I’m so sorry,” he said quietly, almost whispering. I don't think I should keep quiet.

A feeling of dread took over her.

He left you this note before he left.

The waiter handed him a piece of folded paper.

His hands trembled as he carefully unfolded and began to read.

The letter that explained everything
“I arrived at this restaurant tonight with a ring in my pocket. I wanted us to spend the rest of our lives together as husband and wife. I wanted this to be the night when our future officially started.

But first I needed to test you to make sure you were the right person for me.

And you failed strikyly in that test.

Seeing how you reacted to something as simple as supporting us like an egalitarian team tonight showed me a facet of yours that I wasn’t prepared to see or accept.
