My brother’s fiancée asked my grandmother to bake an enormous wedding cake, then refused to pay her for it. So I decided to give the bride a wedding gift she would never forget.

I’d wanted Ashley to understand that she couldn’t humiliate our seventy-three-year-old grandmother and walk away without consequences. But I’d never imagined that a simple invoice hidden inside a wedding gift would expose something serious enough to make my brother end his marriage on his wedding day.

Daniel remained beside Grandma, looking exhausted but strangely certain of his decision. He had just discovered that the woman he’d promised to spend his life with considered an elderly woman’s medication less important than the appearance of a perfect reception.

Grandma was still holding a napkin against her damp cheeks.

“Daniel, sweetheart, I never wanted any of this,” she whispered.

“I know, Grandma.”

“I only asked for the money because I needed it. I would’ve made you a cake anyway, just not one that cost so much.”

Daniel gently squeezed her hand.

“You shouldn’t have to explain that. Ashley made a promise, and she should’ve kept it.”
