“It’s still beautiful,” I told her.
She smiled sadly.
“Thank you, sweetheart.”
The silver picture frame I’d purchased for Daniel and Ashley was still sitting near the head table. Beneath it lay the invoice that had started everything, listing the ingredients and labor I’d reimbursed that morning.
I’d never intended the gift to destroy a marriage. My plan had been simple: give Ashley an opportunity to acknowledge her promise, apologize, and repay the money.
Instead, she’d tried to conceal the invoice, attacked me for bringing it up, and dismissed Grandma’s need for medication as though it were an inconvenience.
Daniel had heard those words himself. Whatever happened next between him and Ashley, he couldn’t pretend he didn’t know how she’d behaved.
I thought back to Grandma sitting at her kitchen table that morning, blaming herself for trusting a promise made in front of family. She’d been so worried about spoiling Daniel’s celebration that she was prepared to sacrifice money she needed for her own health.
