My dying wife asked me to find my first love as her final wish — when I learned why, my knees nearly gave out. The moment I knew why, my knees nearly gave out.

“If Walter ever learns the truth, he’ll never forgive either of us.”

Beneath Carol’s letter, Ruth had written a four-word reply.

“Then make sure he doesn’t.”

I sat against the attic wall surrounded by forty years of secrets and finally understood the full weight of Carol’s last request. She had not merely known why Anna disappeared.

She had helped raise our biological daughter while allowing both Anna and me to believe we had lost her forever.

PART 4: THE DAUGHTER WE HAD BOTH LOST

I could not tell Anna what I had discovered over the phone, so late that night I drove back to Pittsburgh carrying the letters with me. When she opened the door, I barely gave her time to ask why I had returned.

“She’s alive. I found our daughter.”

Anna froze, and for several seconds she simply stared at me. Then she asked the question in a voice that barely sounded like her own.
