“Did she love me?”
There was no hesitation in my answer because whatever else Carol had done, I had witnessed that love every day of Rebecca’s life.
“Every single day.”
Rebecca sat quietly for another moment before asking about Anna. I told her that Anna knew who she was now, had learned that she had two grandsons, and wanted desperately to meet her if Rebecca was willing.
“Does she want to see me?”
“More than anything.”
Rebecca swallowed and looked down at her hands.
“I want to meet her. Soon.”
“You should.”
Then she studied my face, perhaps wondering whether meeting Anna would feel like a betrayal of Carol. After everything I had learned about Ruth and Carol deciding which truths other people were allowed to know, I could not become another person making that choice for someone else.
“Are you okay with that?”
“I’ve had enough people deciding what’s best for someone else.”
