He had not gotten my $640,000.
He had tried.
That mattered legally.
But emotionally, I kept returning to the same question.
When did he decide I was no longer a person he needed permission from?
I asked him that months later.
Not directly.
At a mediated divorce session, we sat in separate rooms.
The mediator carried proposals back and forth.
At one point Daniel sent a message through her:
I made mistakes because I thought Emily was dying.
I told the mediator:
“Please take him my answer exactly.”
She nodded.
“I wasn’t.”
He replied twenty minutes later:
I know that now.
That response stayed with me.
Because he had known it then too.
Maybe not emotionally.
But medically.
He had attended appointments.
He heard the surgeon say the tumor had been removed with clear margins.
He heard them explain the follow-up plan.
He heard cautious optimism.
But a sick wife with a possible future was inconvenient.
