My Husband Disappeared After Our Wedding Until A Letter Arrived 56 Years Later

“The man who survived longer than I knew. The man who made this ridiculous rose. The man who realized at the end that I deserved the truth.”

My voice softened.
“You kept him from me for fifty-six years. I don’t know whether I’ll ever forgive that.”

I looked out the window.

“But you finally gave him back.”

Adrian said nothing.

“So ask me again another day.”

His eyes filled.

“I will.”

We both understood there might not be many days left for him to ask.

That night, I returned home exhausted.

It was almost midnight when I walked into my kitchen.

The crystal wedding vase stood empty on the table.

The fifty-six fresh roses were now with James.

At 11:57, three minutes before our anniversary ended, I carefully placed the single crooked paper rose inside the enormous vase.

Beside it, I placed our wedding photograph.

James in his uniform.

Me in my yellow dress.

Both of us impossibly young.

Laughing.

One brittle little paper flower stood alone in a vase designed to hold dozens.

It looked ridiculous.

And somehow perfect.

I touched one faded petal.

“You were late,” I whispered.

“Fifty-six years late.”

I smiled through my tears.

“You promised me yellow roses on our first anniversary, James. You certainly made me wait long enough.”

Then I looked at the ugliest, most precious flower I had ever owned.

“But it finally reached me.”

I touched the vase gently.

“You kept your promise.”

And after fifty-six years, the yellow rose had finally come home.
