It all started so subtly that I barely noticed it. Whenever my husband, Daniel, came home from work, the first thing he did

was hug our seven-year-old daughter, Lily.

At first, it was the sweetest sight in the world. Lily would run toward her father, wrap her arms around his neck, and hold him

tightly. But then I noticed something strange. During every hug, Daniel would lean closer and whisper something into Lily’s

ear.

Whenever I tried to listen, he immediately stopped. Sometimes Lily smiled. Other times, she nodded seriously. But whenever

I asked what her father had said, she always gave me the same answer.

“It’s a secret, Mommy.”

At first, I laughed.

A father and daughter had a little secret between them. There was nothing wrong with that. But as the days passed, their

behavior became increasingly unusual. Sometimes Daniel would take Lily into the kitchen, to the corner of the living room,

or near the stairs. He would whisper a few words and ask her to repeat them. The moment they noticed me, they both

pretended nothing had happened.

One evening, I walked into Lily’s room and found her standing in front of the mirror, quietly repeating something.

“What are you doing, sweetheart?”

She turned around nervously and quickly hid her hands behind her back.

“Nothing.”

“Did Daddy ask you to say something?”

Lily lowered her eyes.

“I’m not allowed to tell you.”

At that moment, Daniel entered the room. He looked at me and then at Lily.

“Go to your room, sweetheart.”

Once she had left, I asked him what they were hiding from me.

“It’s only a game we play,” he replied. “There’s nothing to worry about.”

But his voice sounded more tense than usual.

That night, I couldn’t sleep. I kept remembering all the little things I had noticed during the past few weeks: Lily’s secretive

answers, Daniel’s whispers, and the strange looks they exchanged whenever I unexpectedly entered a room.

The next day, I tried to speak calmly with my daughter.

“Lily, if anyone ever tells you to keep something secret from Mommy, you can always tell me.”

“Even if it’s a good secret?”

“Yes. Especially if it makes you feel uncomfortable.”
