Grandpa usually remained silent.
But sometimes, a strange expression appeared on his face, as though my mother had reminded him of something he desperately wanted to forget.
Once, I asked her,
“Mommy, why can’t I go on the boat with Grandpa?”
She remained silent for several seconds.
Then she said,
“Because when I was your age, your grandfather did something I’ve never been able to forget.”
“What did he do?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You’re still too young to understand.”
Those words stayed with me for a long time.
One summer, our entire family went to stay at Grandpa’s vacation home.
The house stood beside a large lake.
One morning, my parents drove to a nearby town to do some shopping.
I stayed behind with Grandpa.
At first, everything seemed normal.
He made me breakfast, then suggested taking a walk through the garden.
But when we reached the dock, he suddenly stopped.
