My mother replied,
“You can’t fix the past by repeating the same mistake.”
That night, I overheard them talking in the living room.
My mother was crying.
“I was eight years old, Dad. EIGHT! I kept telling you I was scared, but you insisted I needed to be brave.”
Grandpa answered,
“I know. I’ve never forgiven myself for that.”
I couldn’t listen anymore.
I went back to bed, convinced that Grandpa had done something terrible to my mother all those years ago.
The next morning, my mother suggested that we all sit down and talk.
She placed the old photograph on the table.
“Emily, I was eight years old when I first entered a children’s swimming competition.”
I stared at her in surprise.
“Swimming?”
My mother nodded.
“I was terrified of deep water. But your grandfather used to be a swimming coach. He believed his daughter should be able to overcome her fears.”
