“Dad, why didn’t you ever tell anyone about this?”
He gently stroked my hair.
“Because, sweetheart, when you help someone, the whole world doesn’t need to know about it.”
The following day, three women arrived at our house.
The youngest, Jessica, hugged my father the moment he opened the door.
She held him for a long time.
My mother stood beside me, wiping away her tears.
We all sat together around that same old kitchen table.
The very table where, just one day earlier, I had believed my father was a terrible man.
And right there, Jessica said something I will never forget.
“Our father saved one man’s life. But that man saved the future of an entire family.”
I looked at my seventy-eight-year-old father.
He was still the same quiet, serious man I had always known.
But now I understood something I had never realized before.
