My seven-year-old granddaughter found a diamond ring at the grocery store and gave it back to its rightful owner. The following morning, a stranger appeared at our front door and declared, “There’s something you need to see. And you need to see it right now!”

“It wasn’t a dinner date at all,” Arthur corrected softly.

“Then what was it really?” I asked, catching my breath.

“She was coming back home to see me,” Arthur confessed in a low tone.

“Then why in the world didn’t she come inside your house?” I demanded to know.

Arthur slowly closed his tired eyes as tears leaked down his wrinkled face.

“I watched them both on my front door camera,” Arthur admitted painfully. “Paige rang the doorbell twice. Ryan stood right beside her holding her hand. They just stood there waiting patient on the porch.”

“And where were you?” I asked, horrified.

“I stood right inside the entryway with my hand resting on the door lock,” Arthur whispered.

“And you never opened the door for them,” I stated, the terrible truth hitting me like a physical blow.

“No, I didn’t,” Arthur wept silently.

“Why wouldn’t you open the door?” I cried out softly.
