My son and daughter-in-law laughed when I walked into the courtroom. “Ha-ha, now we’re going to leave her with nothing,” Daniel whispered, certain the bruises they had put on my body would convince the judge I was confused, unstable, and hurting myself, but they had forgotten one important thing about me.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You said your mother’s doctor forgot to add the diagnosis!”

“There was no diagnosis,” I said.

Vanessa turned to me.

She looked suddenly smaller.

“You told me she had dementia,” she said to Daniel.

“I said she was declining.”

“You said a neurologist told you!”

Judge Mercer struck the bench once.Find Legal Help

“That is enough.”

Silence.

Then he said, “Mrs. Vance, do you have evidence relating to the creation of the altered document?”

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa started crying harder.

A week before the hearing, their home printer had malfunctioned.

Vanessa emailed the altered PDF to a copy center.

From her personal account.

The email read:

Daniel says use this new version because Mom’s doctor left out the mental part.

Maya obtained it after Vanessa forwarded the same email chain to Curtis Hale’s office.

Curtis looked as if he might be sick.

He had received the attachment.

But not the earlier messages in the chain until discovery.

Or perhaps his staff had missed them.

Either way, the message existed.

Judge Mercer called the clerk forward.

They spoke quietly.

Then he ordered another recess.

This time, two additional officers entered the courtroom.

Daniel noticed.

“So that’s it?” he said to me. “You’re going to have your own son arrested?”

I looked at him.

“You’re still thinking this is about what I’m doing to you.”

He stared back.

“You broke into my office. You forged my signature. You tried to seize my money. You prepared to sell my home. You photographed injuries you helped cause and used those injuries as evidence that I was incompetent.”Seek Injury Care

My voice never rose.

“You did those things, Daniel.”

He leaned closer.

“You’re my mother.”

“Yes.”

For the first time all morning, my voice shook.

“And you were my son before you became my predator.”

His face collapsed for a second.

Just one.

Then anger returned.

“You always loved Dad more.”

I blinked.

Of all the defenses I expected, that was not one of them.

He continued.

“He respected you. He listened to you. Everything was always Robert and Eleanor. Robert and Eleanor. Perfect team. Perfect marriage. Perfect business minds.”

“Your father loved you.”Get Parenting Tips

“He judged me.”

“He rescued you.”

Daniel stopped.

Vanessa looked at him.

So did Curtis.

I hadn’t planned to say it.
