“No one forced you to wear a white dress, buy a bouquet, or come up with a plan to humiliate me. You did all of that entirely of your own free will.”
I then walked up to her and handed her a small package.
“And here is my gift for you.”
She opened it suspiciously. Inside was her own wedding invitation. On the back, I had written just one sentence:
“You will not be the bride in someone else’s family.”
A few guests couldn’t hold back their laughter.
My mother-in-law turned red with anger, grabbed her bouquet, and stormed toward the exit. But my husband stopped her.
“Mom, I love you, but I will never let you humiliate my wife again. If you want to remain part of our family, you’ll have to learn to respect her.”
She didn’t respond and left the room.

I returned to my seat, took my husband’s hand, and, for the first time that evening, felt an overwhelming sense of relief.
