Then he forced a smile.
“Thomas made a mess of things, Margaret. Don't make it worse.”
The attorneys gathered their briefcases.
Raymond stopped in the doorway.
“One more thing.”
I waited.
“That boy Thomas called his son?”
My stomach tightened.
“Julian?”
Raymond's expression darkened.
“Be careful with him. He isn't what he seems.”
Before I could ask what he meant, Raymond walked away.
I closed the door.
Locked it.
And leaned against it with my eyes shut.
Then I called Thomas's longtime attorney, Evelyn Price.
She answered on the third ring.
“Mrs. Ward?”
“Evelyn, Raymond was just here.”
Her voice changed immediately.
“What did he want?”
“He wanted me to sign something about the trust.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She exhaled.
“Please don't sign anything he brings you.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because Raymond's lawyers have already requested documents relating to the trust. He may be preparing a legal challenge.”
My heart dropped.
