I stared at the words.
Read them again.
Thomas has never been my lover.
My hands began shaking.
I looked at Mr. Harrison.
“What?”
He nodded.
He signed the papers because Raymond wouldn't.
And because Raymond threatened to take Julian from me if I ever told anyone the truth.
The room seemed to tilt.
I pressed my hand over my mouth.
I read the next lines through tears.
Thomas says the legal arrangement will give Julian stability while we work out what to do about Raymond.
I know I should insist that he tell Margaret.
But Thomas says she's been through enough with her mother, the miscarriages, and the store.
He says he cannot bear the thought of losing her.
I wish he'd understand that hiding this will hurt her too.
I lowered the letter.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then I whispered:
“Raymond.”
Mr. Harrison nodded.
