I stopped.
Julian looked at me.
Celia touched my arm.
“You don't have to answer.”
I knew that.
For most of my life, I'd avoided conflict.
I'd preferred kindness to confrontation.
But I was tired of allowing other people to define my family.
I turned toward the reporters.
“My husband was a complicated man.”
The cameras clicked.
“He made choices I wish he hadn't made.”
I swallowed.
“He also accepted responsibility for a child who needed help.”
Someone shouted:
“Was Julian really his son?”
I looked at Julian.
His eyes were wet.
Then I faced the cameras.
“Thomas was Julian's father in the ways Julian knew him. Biology doesn't erase the years someone spent showing up.”
The reporters fell quiet.
I continued.
“And whatever mistakes my husband made, Julian did nothing wrong.”
My voice trembled.
“He does not deserve to be punished because adults kept secrets before he was old enough to understand them.”
