And for the first time, I understood what Thomas had hoped might happen.
Julian could give me stories about the father Thomas had been to him.
And I could give Julian stories about the husband Thomas had been to me.
Neither story was complete.
But together, they made the man more real.
Later that night, Julian walked me to my car.
Before I got in, he stopped me.
“Margaret?”
“Yes?”
“I don't want your money.”
I stared at him.
He continued.
“I know Thomas left you the trust. And I know people are wondering whether I'm going to ask you for some of it.”
I shook my head.
“I haven't thought that.”
Julian smiled sadly.
“I have a good life. Lucy and I have what we need.”
He paused.
“I just wanted to know you.”
My eyes filled.
I took his hand.
“Julian, may I tell you something?”
“Of course.”
