Sarah Palin: From Small-Town Alaska to National Political Icon

Few political figures in modern American history have managed to stay in the headlines for as long, or in as many different ways, as Sarah Palin. Nearly two decades after she first burst onto the national stage, she remains one of the most recognizable names in American politics — a figure whose career has moved through small-town government, the governor's mansion, a historic vice-presidential run, reality television, media commentary, and a return to the campaign trail, all while continuing to generate headlines that range from serious political analysis to outright internet hoaxes.

EARLY LIFE AND THE ROAD INTO POLITICS

Sarah Louise Heath was born on February 11, 1964, in Sandpoint, Idaho, the third of four children. Her father, Charles Heath, worked as a science teacher and track coach, while her mother, also named Sarah, was a school secretary. The family relocated to Alaska when Sarah was an infant, and she grew up in Wasilla, a small city north of Anchorage that would later become closely associated with her political identity.
