Then his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Recognition.
He knew.
I felt the last soft thing inside me close.
“You knew,” I said.
He looked away.
It was small. Almost nothing.
But the room felt colder.
“You knew what Malcolm did.”
Julian’s voice dropped. “It was years ago.”
Maya whispered something under her breath.
I heard my own pulse.
“You told me you were different.”
“I was trying to be.”
“No. You were trying to inherit clean hands.”
His eyes snapped back to mine.
“You think you’re innocent? You married me while investigating my family.”
“I gave you chances to tell me the truth.”
“I loved you.”
That almost worked.
Not because I believed him fully, but because some foolish ghost inside me remembered the man who brought soup when I was sick, who kissed my forehead in the rain, who held my hand in front of cameras like it was something precious.
Then I remembered his voice on the recording.
Quiet girls are useful.
“No,” I said. “You loved how easy you thought I would be to own.”
His face hardened.
There he was.
The real Julian never stayed hidden for long.
“You’ll regret this,” he said.
Maya smiled. “That sounded threatening.”
“It’s a warning.”
Samir moved another half inch.
Julian backed down, but his eyes stayed on me.
“My family will survive,” he said. “We always do. You don’t know what kind of people you’re fighting.”
“I know exactly what kind.”
He gave a thin, ugly smile.
“Then you should know we don’t fall alone.”
He turned and left.
The door closed behind him.
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then Maya replayed the final minute and looked at me.
“That’s enough for a protective filing.”
Adrian’s voice came through the phone. “And enough to show continued intimidation.”
But I was not thinking about filings.
I was thinking about Julian’s last words.
We don’t fall alone.
At 11:58, I found out what he meant.
The first email came from an address I did not recognize.
No subject.
One attachment.
Maya told me not to open it. Adrian told me to forward it untouched. Samir called in our digital analyst.
But I already knew.
Some messages carry a weight before you read them.
The analyst opened it safely on a separate machine.
A video appeared.
At first, the footage was dark. Then the camera shifted, revealing an office I recognized from old photographs.
