My name was written across the front in Javier's handwriting.
I stared at it.
"I've never seen that before."
The inspector asked if I wanted to open it.
I nodded.
Inside were several printed pages.
At first, the numbers made no sense.
Then I recognized my business name.
Morales Financial Consulting.
Beneath it was a draft agreement transferring a majority ownership interest to a holding company controlled by Javier and Mercedes.
My breath stopped.
There was even a signature page.
With my name typed beneath an empty line.
I turned the next page.
A handwritten note was clipped to the corner.
Get her to agree tonight. She'll sign once she calms down.
I recognized Mercedes's handwriting immediately.
The inspector leaned forward.
"Do you know anything about this document?"
"No."
"Have you agreed to sell or transfer your business?"
"Never."
The room seemed to tilt.
Suddenly, dinner was no longer simply an expensive humiliation.
