WHILE VISITING MY FUTURE IN-LAWS, I SAW MY SIL LOOKING PALE AND EXHAUSTED, EATING WATERY OATMEAL. AS I LEFT, SHE SECRETLY SLIPPED ME A NOTE: “COME BACK AT 10 P.M. YOU WILL SEE WHAT YOU NEED TO SEE!”

Recognizing patterns was how I made my living.

And nothing happening inside the Mercer home felt accidental.

Outside my apartment, Daniel kissed my forehead goodbye.

That was when I felt the folded paper Emily had slipped into my hand.

At 9:42 p.m., I changed into dark clothes, put two fully charged phones into my bag, activated cloud backup, and texted my location to my colleague Maya.

Then I drove back toward the Mercer estate.

Whatever Emily needed me to witness at ten o’clock, I intended to make certain it could never be buried.
### Part 2

At 9:57 p.m., I parked two houses away and approached from the side street.

Emily had written an additional message on the back of her note.

Kitchen window. Don’t knock.

Through the partially open window, I could hear voices carrying into the night.

Richard spoke first.

“You embarrassed your mother today.”

Emily answered quietly. “I didn’t say anything.”

“That’s exactly the problem,” Victoria snapped. “You let Claire stare at you like some pathetic victim.”

Then I heard Daniel.

My stomach tightened.

He hadn’t gone home.

“She won’t be a problem,” he said. “Claire asks questions, but she’ll learn.”

Victoria laughed.

“They all learn.”

I began recording.

Inside, Emily stood beside the kitchen table while Richard held a folder.

He slapped it down in front of her.

“Sign.”

“I already told you no.”

Daniel sighed as though his sister were simply being difficult.

“You’re being ridiculous, Em.”

“What is it?” Victoria demanded. “You think you deserve Grandmother’s trust money after everything we’ve done for you?”

Suddenly, the situation made sense.

Emily wasn’t living with her parents because she was incapable of leaving.

They wanted her there because she had money.

Richard opened the folder.

“You sign control of the account to me, and this unpleasantness ends.”

Emily’s voice trembled.

“Grandmother left it to me because she knew what you were.”

Richard’s chair scraped violently across the floor.

I couldn’t clearly see what happened next, but Emily stumbled backward and struck the counter.

Daniel made no move to help her.

Instead, he said, “Stop fighting Dad.”

Whatever love I still had for him disappeared with that sentence.

I continued recording for another twelve minutes.

Threats.

Financial coercion.

Victoria admitting that they monitored Emily’s phone.

Richard boasting that they had convinced Emily’s doctor she was “emotionally unstable.”
