Elkins carjacked a red Kia Sportage and led police on a chase down Interstate 49 into Bossier City. At 6:25 a.m., officers exchanged gunfire with him. At 7:03 a.m., he was pronounced dead at the scene. It remains unclear whether he was killed by police bullets or his own hand. Louisiana State Police is investigating.
βThis by far was probably one of the most challenging incidents SPD has ever faced,β said Chief Wayne Smith. βWe were working five different crime scenes simultaneously.β
The timeline is clinical. The horror is not. One child was found on the roof β shot while scrambling away. Three people β a woman, the 13-year-old survivor, and one other child β managed to get out. The rest did not.
At a press conference Sunday, family members did not speak. Instead, advocates read their words. βAllow them to grieve,β one leader said. βDo not make this about your social media clicks. It is about them.β

The investigation continues. The mothers are still in the hospital. And the only surviving child β the 13-year-old who jumped off a roof with bullets behind him β is now healing from broken bones and the knowledge that everyone else in the house did not make it out alive.
