At 69, I went on vacation alone and fell in love with a 72-year-old man. For seven days I felt like the happiest woman in the world. But our last night I heard a woman say, “You can’t fool her anymore. He's coming home tomorrow and you still don't know how you're going to get rid of her."

Me volví hacia David.

—¿Qué verdad?

He sat on a nearby bench.

For the first time I saw in his face an expression that I had never noticed before.

Miedo.

—Mary, mi esposa Nancy murió hace tres años. Esa parte es verdad.

—¿Y?

David continued:

We were married for forty-six years. Nancy was the only woman I've ever loved in my life. When he died, I just stopped living.

Su voz tembló.

—Durante meses apenas salía de casa. No quería ver a nadie.
