Chapter 1: The Hundred-Million-Dollar Lie 027

“These patients were told they needed specialized transportation, recovery equipment, or treatment coordination.

Some were elderly.

Some were seriously ill.

Many trusted Mark because his company was recommended by people in local healthcare circles.”

I saw Judith Calder’s name.

Vanessa continued.

“Mrs.

Calder was told her husband’s rehabilitation would cost nearly two hundred thousand dollars.

She transferred the money through a private payment arrangement.”

“Did he receive the treatment?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because he’d already died.”

I looked up.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Her husband died three weeks before the final payment.

Mark knew.

He continued billing her anyway.”

The room fell silent.

“That’s fraud,” Miriam said.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you report it?”

“I started collecting records.

I was afraid the company would destroy them if I went in without enough proof.

I also didn’t know which documents were genuine.”

Miriam examined the papers.

“Do you have the originals?”
