Chapter 1: The Hundred-Million-Dollar Lie 027

“Some.

Others are copies from systems I was authorized to use.

I haven’t altered them.”

She hesitated.

“There are also payments using Emily’s name.”

My skin went cold.

“What kind of payments?”

Vanessa slid another page toward me.

At the top was the title:

Harbor Light Patient Assistance Fund.

Below it, a financial summary identified me as an executive director.

“I’ve never heard of this charity.”

“It’s registered under your name,” Vanessa said.

I shook my head.

“No.”

“It received donations from several families.

Some money was transferred into Carter Medical Transport.

Some was used to pay business debts.”

“Why would Mark put it under my name?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Because people trust you.”

I couldn’t speak.

“You’ve volunteered at hospitals, organized food drives, helped families find financial assistance.

Mark used your reputation to make the organization look legitimate.”

I remembered the photographs he’d taken of me at charity events.
