Chapter 1: The Hundred-Million-Dollar Lie 027

Then I noticed something.

Mark hadn’t written a single sentence asking how I felt.

He hadn’t apologized for the missing money.

He hadn’t mentioned Judith Calder.

He simply wanted the ticket.

I put the letter in the evidence folder.

The next morning, Detective Sloane called.

“Mrs.

Carter, we’ve identified several additional accounts connected to Harbor Light.”

“How many?”

“Enough that we’re expanding the investigation.”

She paused.

“There’s also something I need you to consider.

Some of the financial records suggest your husband may be attempting to transfer assets out of reach.”

“Can you stop him?”

“We’re working through the appropriate legal procedures.

Your attorney will receive information about any orders affecting your interests.”

I looked toward the safe-deposit key resting beside my coffee.

“And the lottery?”

“Continue following your lawyer’s advice.

Do not negotiate privately with your husband.”

Then her voice softened.
